The beautiful
Nahoon River Estuary
is one of the most important natural assets in Buffalo City and should be conserved at all costs.
Estuaries are very important as they are highly productive ecosystems that provide a range of goods and services ranging from nursery areas for juvenile fish to stopovers for migrant birds and recreational opportunities.
Their natural beauty, however, makes estuaries sensitive and vulnerable to
development.
The Nahoon Estuary Management Plan
The Department of Economic Affairs Environment and Tourism completed a Management Plan for the Nahoon Estuary which was promulgated in the
Provincial Gazette of 19 December 2016:

The following concerns have been identified in this plan:
- The deterioration of the water quality
- The reduction of fresh water inflow
- The spread of alien invasive species
- The changes in the bank structure The lack of protection of the estuarine environment
